Coverage

Warranty

Ranch House Doors warrants its doors for one year from delivery against defects in workmanship or material. Proper finishing, maintenance, and care are required to maintain coverage.

Coverage

Ranch House Doors warrants its doors for a period of one year from the time of delivery against defects in workmanship or material. All Ranch House Doors must be properly protected and cared for according to the instructions and guidelines laid out herein.

All doors must be finished within 72 hours of receiving the door. Due to the hygroscopic nature of lumber, doors should not be stored in an unfinished state beyond this period. RHD recommends that garage doors are finished prior to installation. Attempting to finish doors while installed may compromise the finish and void the warranty.

The door must be inspected BEFORE finishing, staining, or installing. Once the door is stained, sealed, painted, or installed it is not available for a warranty claim. Performing these actions implies full acceptance of the product.

Material Warranties

In addition to the RHD 1-year workmanship warranty, certain engineered wood materials carry separate manufacturer warranties covering the material itself.

1 yr
RHD Workmanship

All Ranch House Doors. Covers defects in workmanship and materials from date of delivery. Subject to proper finishing and maintenance.

9 yr
Extira / MDO

Manufacturer material warranty on Extira and MDO engineered wood panels against delamination and structural degradation. Separate from RHD warranty.

Mfr.
Tricoya

Tricoya carries the manufacturer's extended material warranty covering the panel material against rot, decay, and dimensional instability. See tricoya.com for current terms. Separate from RHD warranty.

Manufacturer material warranties are issued directly by the material manufacturer and are independent of the Ranch House Doors workmanship warranty. Contact your dealer for documentation.

Paint Grade Finish Instructions

Surface preparation: All surfaces must be clean and free of dirt, grease, dust, or any substance that will prevent paint adhesion. Sand with 220 grit or greater sandpaper going with the grain only.

Paint grade doors must receive three coats of paint on all six sides of each section: one coat of primer and two coats of exterior grade finish paint. Both latex and alkyd paints are acceptable.

Section breaks must be sealed. Failure to seal section breaks may result in swelling.

Species such as cedar and redwood require tannin stain blocking primers to prevent acid bleed-through. Bleed-through is not considered a defect and is not covered under warranty.

Doors must be caulked on all horizontal areas to prevent moisture penetration. RHD recommends Lexel clear caulking applied over the paint. Failure to properly caulk will void the warranty.

Stain Grade Finish Instructions

Surface preparation: Clean all surfaces and sand with 220 grit or greater sandpaper with the grain only. Apply pre-staining wood conditioner on softwoods.

Recommended process: One coat of Old Masters Gel Stain for color, followed by three coats of an Oil Alkyd product (PPG Door and Window, Proluxe Maintenance, or McCloskey Satin). Light sand between top coats.

Alternative products: PPG Cetol 1 and 23. Use of any other products will void the warranty. Apply three coats total (sealer and two top coats) to all exterior, interior, and edges of each door section.

Do not use deck stains. Lacquer single coat systems are used at your own risk. Using these products will void the warranty.

After finishing, caulk all horizontal boards and surfaces with Lexel clear caulking to prevent moisture penetration. Failure to caulk will void the warranty.

Vintage / Reclaimed Wood Finish Instructions

RHD recommends the following products for reclaimed and aged wood doors:

  • Bora-Care for prevention and control of termites, carpenter ants, wood-destroying beetles, fungi, and algae
  • Rain Guard sealant for all reclaimed and aged exterior products. Follow manufacturer sealing instructions.
  • Modern Masters DP612 Exterior Dead Flat Varnish to maintain the aged effect and remove undesirable variations in sheen
Reclaimed and aged material can slightly shrink creating up to 1/8" gap as it acclimates. This is not a defect but a natural characteristic. Cutting reclaimed material will expose a clean new edge. The customer is responsible for staining edges to match.

Dark Stains and Paints

Dark stains and paints excessively increase the heat absorbed by a wood door. Lumber cannot endure this excessive heat as it creates stress resulting in cracking, warping, twisting, shrinkage, and fiber compromise. Any wood product placed under these circumstances will be void of warranty.

South and southwest facing doors should use cedar. For dark paints and stains RHD recommends: Paint grade, use Tricoya only (standard Extira and MDO are not recommended. Painting black or dark colors voids the warranty). Stain grade, use cedar or Accoya only.

Maintenance Schedule

Proper maintenance begins with visual inspection. These timeframes are general guidelines. Maintenance may be needed sooner depending on weathering, exposure, and altitude.

South or West exposure
Every 18 months
North or East exposure
Every 36 months

Do not wait too long before performing maintenance. The longer maintenance is delayed, the more expensive refinishing becomes, potentially requiring stripping, re-staining, and a full 3-coat system.

Recommended Maintenance Products

  • Sikkens ProLuxe Cetol Maintenance RE, a premium clear alkyd resin exterior wood finish for maintenance
  • Stains: PPG Cetol 1, PPG Cetol 23, or Old Masters Gel Stain
  • Top coats: PPG Door and Window Oil Alkyd (2 coats), Pro Lux Maintenance, or McCloskey Satin Sheen
  • All 6 sides and edges must be sealed. Pay extra attention to door edges where moisture absorption is most likely.

Storage

Doors stored in an unfinished state past the allowed 72-hour sealing period will void the warranty. When storing, doors must be laid flat with support every 36 inches to prevent abnormal bowing. Doors stored unsupported or standing vertically will void the warranty.

What Is Not Covered

  • Shrinkage and swelling, natural characteristics of lumber, not defects
  • Bowing, checking, and warping from environmental exposure, not defects
  • Tannic staining from cedar, redwood, or oak, not a defect
  • Brad puncture holes on cedar, incense cedar, Alaskan yellow cedar, Spanish cedar, or redwood face and overlays
  • Color variation in putty after staining
  • Transportation, shipping, labor, paint, stain, sealers, or any charge related to a warranty claim
  • Doors that have been stained, sealed, painted, or installed before inspection
  • Damage from improper installation
  • Dark or black finishes on Extira, MDO, or any species other than cedar or Accoya
  • Failure to follow finish, caulking, or maintenance requirements
