Fire Rating Options

WUI-compliant custom wood garage door options for properties in California High Fire Hazard Severity Zones and Wildland Urban Interface areas.

What WUI Compliance Covers

Ranch House Doors offers a fire rating option built to California SFM Standard 12-7A-1 - the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) standard for garage doors and opening protective assemblies.

When this option is specified on an eligible configuration, the door is built and tested to resist ignition from wind-driven embers, radiant heat exposure, and direct flame contact, per the requirements of California SFM 12-7A-1.

Fire rating is available as an option on qualifying door configurations. Not all designs or species are eligible. Contact your authorized dealer to discuss fire rating requirements for your project.

Do You Need a Fire Rated Door?

California requires WUI-compliant garage doors in designated High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (HFHSZ). If your property falls in one of these zones, your building permit will require a compliant door.

Common areas requiring WUI-compliant doors:

  • Most of the California foothills and mountain communities
  • Large portions of Southern California (LA, San Diego, Ventura, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties)
  • Northern California fire zones (Napa, Sonoma, Marin, Sierra Nevada foothills)
  • Any property designated VHFHSZ by CAL FIRE

How to check: Ask your local building department or fire marshal if your property is in a designated HFHSZ or VHFHSZ. Your building permit will specify if a WUI door is required.

Availability

Fire rating is available as an upgrade on full custom orders only. Not every collection and configuration qualifies. Your authorized Ranch House Doors dealer can confirm whether your specific design can meet the compliance requirements before you order.

The fire rating applies to the door assembly as built and specified. Modifications to a fire-rated configuration may affect compliance.
